Durant has come a long way since it’s beginning as a Relay Station in 1858 on the Butterfield Overland Mail Route – the first “overland” mail service between the Mississippi Valley and the Pacific Coast.

The Butterfield Stagecoach Route ran about 3 miles West of what is now the Downtown. On Fisher Station Road, you can visit the historic marker of one of the three Relay Stations in Bryan County!
 
    
  The construction of the Katy Railroad in 1872 secured Durant’s future The town was named after a local French-Choctaw family, who came to the Choctaw lands over the Trail of Tears.

Pierre Durant and his four sons made the trudge down the Mississippi on the way to the southeastern part of the Choctaw Nation in 1832. His son, Dixon Durant, is recognized as the founder of Durant.
    
Come to Durant where the annual temperature is 63.4 degrees F, annual rainfall is 40 inches, with 227 clear days on average and average of 347 Flying days! Durant is fortunate to have 4 distinct seasons. For gardeners, we are in USDA hardiness zone:  7b where Magnolia trees, crepe myrtles and tomatoes thrive Average first and last frost dates are April 15 and October 20th, on average.

Durant’s Historic Downtown features many boutique, antique & western shops, art galleries, tearooms, and cafes that cater to both tourists and locals. New park benches, trees, and landscape are designed to welcome everyone downtown.

SOS University, the “Campus of 1,000 Magnolia’s”,  is home to the Red River Arts Council, The Shakespearean Festival, Theatre, and cultural events, and is home to the top Collegiate Rodeo Team, with their own equestrian Center. The Savage Storm Sports teams look forward to the new College Stadium now under construction.

EAKER Field Airport hosts the University’s Aviation program.  The airfield offers 24 hour fuel, paved airstrips, plane rentals, flight training, aircraft maintence, hangars and Navigational Guild.

Kiamichi Technology & Vocational Center of Durant offers technical training and seminars.

Amtrak Train offers passenger service to Fort Worth, TX and Oklahoma City. Greyhound Bus services Durant as well.

Durant has several movie theatres, a bowling alley, 8 City parks, public swimming pool, Lake Durant, a new Public Library in the works, and a new Multi-Sports Complex, with a new lake with walking trails to be started soon. Check out the Three Valley Museum and the Caddo Indian Territory Museum.

Festivals and activities occur year-round in Durant, such as the annual Magnolia festival in early summer or the Main Street Carnival in September.

It's less than 15 minutes to Texoma Lake, the "lake of all seasons. Camping, RV sites, cabins, lake view homes, picnic areas, & beaches surround the lake. The Lake is the site for the National Sandbass Festival, & Striper Festival. Crappie, Walleye, and record breaking Catfish keep fishermen coming back.

The Blue River runs through Bryan County and is host to outstanding trout fishing from November through March. Canoes, kayaks and rafts are also welcome on the 200+ square miles of watershed.

Historic Fort Washita hosts Historic Re-Enactments, Ghost Story and Candlelight tours, and Fur Trader Rendezvous, events year round.
